Hello my dear kababayans! I have been working and living here in Japan for almost five years and I am contented with my job and life. However, i got dissapointed with some of our kababayans here in Japan. Last night I was at the 100 Yen shopping, buying some pasalubongs for my family beacuse I am going home for summer vacation on July 31st, I saw two of our kababayans also doing some shopping … so being a Filipina usually I am friendly so I approached them and said hi to them… then I asked do you live in this area…the other one said yes,…so, i got excited beacuse i really want to have friends (i just moved here)…then i asked in which area do you live here…and to my dismay the other one said “SECRET”…God, what kind of answer is that…and then the other one followed it up with "BAKIT? MAY ITINITINDA KA BA?.. So, i got sad and dissapointed with them so I answered… No, I.m not selling anything … in fact I am a High School English teacher here… then they walked away…

Hi Ruby,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Don’t take it personally. They probably had unfavorable experience with other Filipinos, thus a bit wary. You had a good intention and it’s their loss of missing the opportunity to meet a wonderful person like you. Besides, you probably don’t want to associate with rude, unrefined people like them. So heads up! And don’t be perturbed.

By the way, pareho’ng birthday natin, Nov. 21st. :yippee:

Dear Friends,

Objectively:

One should not methodize or categorize individuals based on their nationality or ethnicity.

Subjectively:

I deduce, having traveled to many countries that majority of ignorant or unrefined people are very close minded, which equates to having ill manner. It doesn’t matter which country you’re from or country you go to, there are always the good and the bad.

Genuine people do not discriminate against color, religion, etc.

On the side note:
As a general rule, people should abide by the rules and regulations, act in acceptable manner and try to assimilate themselves to their host country. Resistance is futile. .No, you will not become a BORG… any Trekkies out there? When you’re in another country, have an open mind and make an effort to try to understand them. They will give you an insight into a unique and beautiful culture.
When you’re in Rome, do as Romans do - you get the idea………

…Syempre kabayan eh! at isa pa nagsasalita sila ng wika natin…then suddenly they ask me “Miss saang CLUB ka pumapasok?” Maybe we should have a positive attitude about these things. Believe me, a lot of us will NEVER be mistaken for an entertainer. If you’re asked the same question by another Pinoy, how about this: Smile, and then say, “Gusto ko sana sa club, kaso hindi ako natanggap, kaya ngayon technical trainee na lang ako.” Or maybe that’s overdoing it?

Just a friendly advice. Enjoy your stay here.

Japayukis are fine with me. And you’re right, people tend to stereotype so kahit ginagawa lang ng ibang mga Pinoy, lahat tayo damay.

Hisashiburi, tokiohero! Yoroshiku.

Its true, most Filipinos dito are ganyan. I dont see lots of Filipinos, meron ilan-ilan na filipino dito sa area ko. Whenever they talk to me, the first question na tanong nila sa akin. Japanese asawa mo? Ilan taon na sya? Weird questions … hindi ko ma gets … i dont bother to ask why din …

Yung iba naman, talagang suplada. Like one time, magkatabi kami sa clinic while waiting for our turn, almost 2 hours kami magkatabi.

They wud say Chinese cla. Pag tinanong mo kung bakit sya marunong magsalita ng tagalog, then you’ll get to know na Filipino pala tagala cla, just dont want to say …

Dear Friends,

Salamat ulit sa mga messages. I have been teaching for nineteen years now…14 years sa Pinas and almost five years in Japan. Usually, the way how I educate my students is showing what I want them to pick up by example. I live what I teach. I first taught in an International school in Tokyo then I moved to Chiba and worked for a senior and junior high school. In the said school I did my best as a teacher and as a person. I was the first Filipino teacher hired by that school. People in that school were so susprised to know how well Filipinos speak English and how dedicated we are to our job. There were different reactions from students and teachers. Students wanted me out of the school because I am not a native speaker, some native speaker teachers wanted me out because I was getting much higher salary than them. But i proved to them that Filipinos are capable and deserving. I wasnt easy but I did it. Then after two years, that school hired another Filipino and other Asian teachers. This school used to hire native speakers, blonde hair, blue eyes only. My point here is, doing our best and exhibiting proper manner and treating people well regardless of race, status, country of origin, japayuki man, nagbebenta ng itlog o phone card…makes a lot difference to ourselves and to other people.
