One of the Philippines’ most popular film and music stars will stand trial on drug possession charges for allegedly carrying methamphetamines.

Nora Aunor, also known as The Superstar, has starred in more than 170 films and recorded more than 20 albums. Ms Aunor was arrested at the airport in Los Angeles en route to Oakland. Ms Aunor may not have been read her rights prior to questioning, and says a request for a translator during interview was not granted.

I understand that you need a translator in Japan, but the States?! I also think Japanese courts routinely dismiss defense claims that the defendant was not provided a translator during questioning. Any thoughts?

It appears to me that Nora Aunor is THE quintessential PINOY idol - bagay talaga siya sa Pinas dahil malaki ang parallel ng buhay niya sa buhay ng Pinas. Here is a superb actress who has been so richly gifted with natural inborn talent by God - marunong siyang kumanta, she can act better than any of our actresses (this admission coming from me na anti-Nora, ha…), but she chooses to throw it all away with her bad attitude and behavior, at bibintangan niya ang society para sa mga misfortunes niya. Di ba parang Pinas? Ang dami nating natural resources, pero dahil sa katarantaduhan ng goberyno, politiko, at natin na rin as a people, kulelat na kulelat tayo ngayon? And then kung sinu-sino ang pinapasahan natin ng kasalanan? Kesyo interference ng Kano, cheap labor ng China, unfair practice ng Japan, tienes, tienes… haaay naku!

On the other hand, tignan mo ang kanyang arch-rival na si Vilma. Limited ang talent niya compared to Nora, at alam niya yon. Isang patak ng luha ni Nora on a good day, kahit anong hagulgul ni Vilma ay di niya matatapatan. So she works very hard at it - total discipline, talagang professional, nag-aaral. Tignan mo ngayon kung sino ang mas may significant body of work? Nora gets one film on the rare occassion a producer takes the risk of using her (dahil baka nga di matapos ang pelikula mo pag tinoyo siya), while Vilma is everywhere: may sine, may TV, may commercials, may negosyo, mayor pa! Kung ikumpara sa bansa, parang Japan. Stretched to the max ang lahat ng resources, pero maunlad!
