History

The Association of Filipino Scholars in Tsukuba originated in the 1980s as an informal group through which Filipino students and scholars could meet and discuss their studies and life in Japan.[1] The Association of Filipino Scholars in Tsukuba was formally established in 1988.[2]

Because most members were students at the University of Tsukuba, the organization was originally called the Association of Filipino Students in Tsukuba (FAST).[3]

In the late 1990s, the “Students” in its name was changed to “Scholars” to reflect its varied membership.
