Filipinos in Hyōgo Prefecture have a registered population of 5,657 individuals as of 2022, the 14th largest group of Filipinos in Japan by prefecture, ahead of Tochigi and behind Fukuoka.[1]

The centers of Filipino population in Hyōgo Prefecture are the cities on the coast facing the Seto Inland Sea.

The capital city of Kobe has the largest number of Filipinos in Hyōgo Prefecture, with 1,580 Filipino residents, followed by Himeji with 574 Filipinos, Amagasaki at the border with Osaka with 481 Filipinos, and Kakogawa with 349.[1:1]

The Consulate General of the Philippines was opened in 1956 in Akashimachi Chuo-ku, Kobe City. For almost four decades the consulate stood in its original location until it was transferred to Osaka following the Great Hanshin Earthquake that devastated Kobe City in 1995.[2]

Hyōgo Prefecture

Hyōgo Prefecture (兵庫県, Hyōgo-ken) is a prefecture of Japan located in the Kansai region of Honshu. Hyōgo Prefecture has a population of 5,469,762 (as of 1 June 2019) and has a geographic area of 8,400 square kilometers. Hyōgo Prefecture borders Kyoto Prefecture to the east, Osaka Prefecture to the southeast, and Okayama Prefecture and Tottori Prefecture to the west.[4]

Kōbe is the capital and largest city, with other major cities including Himeji, Nishinomiya, and Amagasaki.[4:1]

Hyōgo Prefecture has an IT industry, many heavy industries, metal and medical, Kobe Port being one of the largest ports in Japan. Kobe Port also hosts one of the world’s fastest supercomputers.[4:2]
