Filipinos in Tsuchiura City have a registered population of 1,065 in 2022, the second largest group of Filipinos in Ibaraki Prefecture after Joso City.[1]
In 2019, the 975 Filipino residents of the Tsuchiura City formed the largest group (23.3%) of foreigners in the city, ahead of the Chinese (17.7%), Brazilians (11.0%) and Vietnamese (9.7%).[2]
A sizable number of Filipinos reside in the Arakawaoki area of southern Tsuchiura City.

One of Tsuchiura City’s most prominent figures is professional sumo wrestler Akira Takayasu, whose mother, Bebelita Bernadas Takayasu, hails from the Philippines.[3]
In August 2024, Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene J. Garcia-Albano visited Tsuchiura City and met with the city’s Filipino residents.[4]
Tsuchiura City
Tsuchiura (土浦市, Tsuchiura-shi) is a city located in Ibaraki Prefecture. As of 1 January 2024, the city had an estimated population in 2024 of 142,181 people in 66,629 households, and a population density of 1,157 persons per squate kilometre. About 3,000 residents are non-Japanese, a large proportion of these being Filipinos, Chinese or Brazilians.[5]
Located in southwestern Ibaraki Prefecture, Tsuchiura is situated along the western shore of Lake Kasumigaura, the second largest lake in Japan. Tokyo lies about 60 km to the south, and Tsukuba science city borders Tsuchiura to the west.[5:1]
