First day of class. History of Global Governance II under Prof Keiji Nakatsuji, a graduate of University of Chicago (or was it from a university in Chicago?)

Class starts at 10:40, second period. I came ten minutes earlier. At first I was a bit apprehensive about it. I absolutely have no idea how class is conducted here in Rits or in Japan, for that matter. Well, yeah I’ve had classes taught by Japanese senseis. I had a three-month Japanese Language Course in the Philippines and another two months at JICA Osaka, but I was thinking those are special courses for JDS Fellows so, I didn’t presume our class this morning would be carried out in the same manner.

True enough, it was different. Boy, do I love it! :stuck_out_tongue:

Professor Keiji is very eloquent. Although there were still words like Human Rights, which he pronounced as Human Lights, I understood him very well. I find him insightful, frank yet respectful. He jumps from one topic to another. He started by showing us a photograph of Woodrow Wilson (which I didn’t recognize) and discussed the import of the man in the founding of the United Nations, who, interestingly, “was not so “revered” in his country because he has no memorial in the US unlike Kennedy, nor an airport named after him.”

He could say “I am pathetic to the idea of qualifying Post September 11 as world epoch because it is highly political. This is supposed to be an academic discussion although we could not exactly veer away from politics since politics is part and parcel of our main course. Yet I am fully aware of the significance of the World Trade Center bombing in the history of the world in relation to US foreign policy, the war against terror/terrorism.”

Hahaha, ang galing, no? I am already anticipating grand debates about world issues in class J

Then he asked us what our ideas are about the world- was it unifying or was it becoming more diverse? What do you think about the widening gap between the rich and the poor? Looking at it from a global perspective is just huge. Wow, it has been a very long time since I last thought about these things.

How profound his issues are. How he made globalization seem like a totally new concept whereas during my undergraduate years, it has become so trite I feel like my ears involuntary shut at a sign of yet another encounter. Then he made mention about radicalization being a manifestation of the extremists’ opposition to a single country’s world dominance. Nicely put. The idea wasn’t exactly new but the way he said it made the perception outstandingly unbiased and at the same time sensitively academic.

I like it. I am aware that we have not really discussed anything but the introduction yet I felt so ensconced in the course already.

Needless to say, I really felt at home sitting at the center of the “edifying room”- to romanticize it.

Thank you Lord for this opportunity! Ang sarap mag-aral!

I am truly looking forward to attending my other classes, full of hope that they’ll be just as enriching.

Rits? Meaning Ritsumeikan? Which campus are you in, sa Kyoto o Biwako? Ilan kayong Pinoy diyan, marami ba?

hai, ritsumeikan.

sa Kinugasa Campus, tatlo kaming JDS. Meron pa kong nakilalang 2 Pinoy kaya lang ibang program.

Sa Shiga may mga JDS din. Di ko lang sure kung ilan.

Pina-dama lang ako nong 1st day.

Ang hirap din palang mag-aral dito.

Haggard! Demanding ang profs!
