Ok, I have a question. My hubby’s driving me up the bloody wall with this question!:order: How do you say this in English?

If Gloria is still a president, we usually say
“What number president is Gloria?”
If you are talking about the past, you say, halimbawa,
“What number president was Carter?”
Some may argue that since it is a “historical fact”, use of present tense must be preferable, but usage allows this.
As for wikang Hapon, use of present tense is common even if you are talking about a past president.
カーターは何代目の大統領です か。(ka-ta- wa nanndaime no daitouryou desu ka?)

English is not really my first language, but to tell you the truth, here in the states, Filipinos are sometimes better at writing in English than some born in America-Americans.
I don’t know if “what number president” is grammatically correct or not.
I guess it is one of those things that got lost in translation.
Like asking “Ano ang kapatid mo, lalaki ba o babae?”
The entire sentence has to be revised to be translated correctly, if not exactly.
It would be translated like this; “Do you have a brother or a sister?”

Like asking “Ano ang kapatid mo, lalaki ba o babae?”
The entire sentence has to be revised to be translated correctly, if not exactly.
It would be translated like this; “Do you have a brother or a sister?”
Yes, translations work like that. The above sentence can be translated to,
“Is your sibling a boy/man or a girl/woman?”, but it wouldn’t sound natural so
you have to change it a bit to suit the target language.
The same thing applies to Japanese.
As for “Pang-ilang presidente si_____?”, this can be translated into Japanese exactly as:
「_____さんは何番目の大統領ですか」 .
From there, re-translating to English using www.alc.co.jp gives us “What number president is_____?” So puting tainga could be right. After all, the ALC database has been prepared by both native English and Japanese speakers.

This thread just reminded me… Pasensya na po at allow me to get off the track a bit… but how do you say “natsukashii” in Tagalog and English?
“Long time no see” is the basic meaning of it, but it can’t seem to be applied to food or things…
Ex. 1
A: Do you remember the band called “Culture Club”?
B: Natsukashii ne!
Ex. 2
Suppose you’ve been away from Japan(Pinas) for more than 10 years, and you just sipped some “miso soup”(sinigang) for the first time in 10 years and say, “Natsukashii na…”.
I guess a lot of you guys here often feel homesick and feel “natsukashii” about a lot of stuff back in the Philippines.

How about “TADAIMA”? But there is an expression in Tagalog, when you say
“ITTEKIMASU”, you can say that “aalis na po ako”… but when you comeback,
Filipinos don’t say “nakabalik na po ako”… American’s say “I’m home”… so… HOw
can you say and express “TADAIMA” in the Philippines?

How about, “palay, bigas at kanin”?
In Nihongo (and maybe in most Asian languages) it’s “ine, kome and gohan”.
But how do you say those in English?

2.) plain old “…naman…” …halimbawa may narinig ka joke na korni or may ginawang sweet ang bf/gf mo sayo…
