Yung Dell kadalasan from Taiwan. Para sa akin …I’ll keep my unit.:type:

Pentium… hehe…

I could be wrong, but I think I heard once that Pent IV for laptop tends to overheat. The advice I think is to avoid laptop w/ pent IV if you entend to get one…

I’ved heared this one also. Madalas daw…daw? siyang tumirik. Is it true mga kasambahay?

so burning dvd-video pala ang main purpose… burning DVD’s take a lot of time, base lang po ito sa experience. I ussually use dell laptops (P4, Pm centrino) in my site work overseas and also do some burnings and dell tends to heat up very easily and hangs-up.

Tama lang po na do some burnings with your friend and check.

On Overheating issues, it depends on which Pentium 4 CPU
was used on a notebook. AFAIK there are three Pentium 4 CPUs
used on most notebook by some makers including, Toshiba, IBM,
Dell, HP, Sony, etc… And these are Pentium 4, Mobile Pentium 4, and
Mobile Pentium 4-M.

Notes on 3-P4 used on most mobile PCs:

  1. Pentium 4 - Ordinary Dekstop CPU, which emits a lot of heat , because of lack
of advance power management compared to the other two P4s. ( usual
speeds released on most notebooks in the market - 2.8-3.xGHz)

  2. Mobile Pentium 4-M - The real mobile version of Pentium 4, better
power management( speedstep, etc. ) compared to the ordinary
P4(desktop CPU) and Mobile P4. ( usual speeds on most notebooks released-
    1.4GHz-2.4GHz)

  3. Mobile Pentium 4 - The modified version of the Dekstop P4,
better power management than its desktop equivalent, but Mobile
Pentium 4-M is still way better than this CPU in terms of power
management.( speed : almost same as the Desktop P4)

On the palmrest , you can check which CPU is installed on your notebook
by checking the “Intel Inside Pentium 4” mark. The Mobile Pentium 4-M comes
with the “M” on the lower portion of the P4 mark, but be aware that Mobile
Pentium 4 and a Dekstop Pentium have the same mark(sticker on the palmrest).

or

By Windows System Properties
(Right Click MyComputer->Properties)

In the case of the poster, he said the speed of the P4 of his friend is at 1.7GHz.
There is a possibility that the CPU on that notebook is a Mobile Pentium 4-M at
1.7GHz. In that case, I’ll go for the Dell one. IMHO, performance wise and power management, Mobile Pentium 4-M 1.7GHz is way better than a 2.8GHz Celeron(may it either Mobile Celeron or Celeron-Desktop CPU, and not
Celeron-M).

pa sa battery life.

panahon ng Pentium M Banias Core, hanggang 1.7 or 1.8 GHz(not sure)
lang yata… Since last year pa, meron nang 2.0GHz na Pentium M,
yung Pentium M Dothan Core(max at 2.oGHz with 2MB cache).

I still prefer the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 notebook( if its a Mobile Pentium 4-M)
from the 2.8GHz Celeron.

And IMHO, Dell is still way better than HP-Compaq

Agree on you’re opinion that aside from the other hardware differences
on which one to choose between the two, and that I also prefer speed.

In the CPU world, its not the the clock speed that really counts a lot, but
its the number of instructions being excuted per secs/msecs/usecs,
and in addition to that the CPU’s internal cache memory size too.

In this case, a Pentium 4 clocked at 1.7GHz is still better than a
Celeron clocked at 2.8GHz because there are certain number
of CPU instructions that a Pentium 4 possesses but a Celeron CPU lacks.
Some of these instructions requires a Celeron CPU to do certain number of CPU
instructions just to do one of these instructions.

In this case I still prefer the Pentium 4(if its a mobile Pentium 4-M :D) notebook.

But ( this is just a but :D), if the Celeron notebook have a much higher RAM ,
bigger HDD capacity, better Video graphic adapter, optical drive writing
capabilities, ports, etc. then in that case, I’ll go for the Celeron notebook

This is maybe a bit off topic.

Agree on you black_is_beauty.

A Pentium M clocked at 1.5GHz can outperform a Mobile Pentium 4-M
clocked at 2.4GHz and almost perform like a Mobile Pentium 4-M at 2.8Ghz.
Plus the much advance power management on a Pentium-M CPU…

the reason why it overheats because the processor they use are meant for desktops. that is why they have mobile processors which are specifically made for laptops. if you are goin for speed and wanna be able to use programs that requires a higher processor, then go for pentium 4. but then…i dont trust DELL :grinny:
