Before I went digital I used to shoot with Contax bodies but this portrait was done with an old, fungus-laden 55mm/F1.8 Takumar attached to a Pentax Spotmatic bought cheap from a fleamarket. I found out (not without disappointment) that photos from the 30-year-old Spotmatic plus the Takumar — 1/200th the price I paid for the AX and a Planar 50mm/F1.4 — were indistinguishable from those shot with the more expensive camera.
This photo is of a friend of mine, Januar, a brash young Filipino-Japanese who mixes English and Nihongo in one sentence (with their own proper accents). The dyed, spiked hair reminds me of Japanese anime characters.
