Hello TF members,

Post the CD (preferably with picture) that you’re currently listening to. This thread has several purposes:

  1. We’ll know what your musical preferences are. Since all members here are basically anonymous, we’ll probably know something about you from the music you listen to.

  2. We’ll have a constantly updated thread in “Chitchat”. We might even get interested in listening to the music other TF users are listening to.

  3. We’ll get to know and practice how to include images in our posts.

A. To insert an image of a CD cover in Firefox, do this: Find the CD in Amazon.com. When you get to the page where it shows the album cover and the “See larger picture” link below it, click on that. You will see the bigger image. Copy the url (web address) from the Navigation toolbar.

Now, on your post, click on the “Insert Image” icon that looks like a mountain with the sun above it. An tag will be inserted. Then, paste the url of your image. After that, close the image tag by clicking on the “Insert Image” again, creating an tag. You can check your image by clicking on the “Preview Post” button.

B. On IE, click the “Insert Image” icon. A window will appear asking you the url of your image. Paste it and click “OK”. The image will appear instantly.

BTW, I’m currently listening to a tape recording of Stone Roses’ Second Coming (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000OT7/qid=1100611946/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/104-3728397-3042309?v=glance&s=music) album below. An early nineties CD. It’s not bad.

Kool, Stone Roses & Slayer. Gusto ko yung lyric mula sa SR album na “How do you sleep, how do you last the night and keep the dogs at bay”, parang napaka-desperate kasi.

Eto ang last kong pinakinggan, Los Aterciopelados, a great band from Colombia!

recently, i’ve acquired a taste for latin jazz, especially cuban. gives me a feeling of nostalgia (tumatanda na yata ako). here’s what i’m listening to these days. the soundtrack of Ry Cooder’s documentary, Buena Vista Social Club. a good documentary of Cuban music. makes you think of what happened to our own Kundimans.

Nakikinig ako ngayon sa Me and Mr Johnson ni Eric Clapton (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001HAHXW/qid=1099463658/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/103-8718408-3682208?v=glance&s=music&n=507846), na remake ng mga kanta ni Robert Johnson.

Hindi masyadong maganda. Less than half ng Unplugged (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002MFE/ref=m_art_li_3/103-1496539-5072619?v=glance&s=music).

Ang lyrics ng I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom, recorded in 1936.

I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom

I’m gon’ get up in the mornin’, I believe I’ll dust my broom (2x)
Girlfriend, the black man you been lovin’, girlfriend, can get my room

I’m gon’ write a letter, telephone every town I know (2x)
If I can’t find her in West Helena, she must be in East Monroe, I know

I don’t want no woman, wants every downtown man she meet (2x)
She’s a no good doney, they shouldn’t 'low her on the street

I believe, I believe I’ll go back home (2x)
You can mistreat me here, babe, but you can’t when I go home

And I’m gettin’ up in the morning, I believe I’ll dust my broom (2x)
Girlfriend, the black man that you been lovin’, girlfriend, can get my room

I’m gon’ call up Chiney, she is my good girl over there (2x)
If I can’t find her on Philippine’s Island, she must be in Ethiopia somewhere

Wowee.
Ngayon ko lang ito pinakinggan na naka-headphones; it’s a totally different experience.

I’ve heard it said that Kind of Blue (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000002ADT/qid=1100592151/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/104-7651409-5255911) still sells 5,000 copies a day. Can you believe it?

Now to add some comments onto previous posts
I have to disagree with reon about the great Beatles albums, hehe. In my opinion, The White Album is better than Abbey Road. It’s a mess, true, but o what a glorious mess. It sticks to your brain like glue.

Tom Waits did a song called “Filipino Box Spring Hog” in Mule Variations (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000IGGA/qid=1100593617/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/104-7651409-5255911) (to say that he actually sang it would be stretching the truth a bit too much hehe). The music is difficult to categorize, but it packs a great deal more blues than the piffle Clapton has been dishing out lately.

Kind of Blue!

"There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere.

Miles conceived these settings only hours before the recording dates and arrived with sketches which indicated to the group what was to be played. Therefore, you will hear something close to pure spontaneity in these performances. The group had never played these pieces prior to the recordings and I think without exception the first complete performance of each was a “take.”

Itong CD yong tipong generic na compilation na laging merong “When a Man Loves a Woman” at “A Whiter Shade of Pale” sa listahan ng mga kanta. Incidentally, number 54 at 57, respectively, yung dalawa sa “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/6596661/500songs) ng Rolling Stone.

just a short backgrounder; i was never a fan of the beatles. they just sounded too shrill to me. i know a couple of their songs but never really had the craving to collect them or anything. not to take anything away from them, they were after all demi-gods.

then i saw the movie ‘i am sam’, i immediately recognized some of the cuts of the sound track as beatles songs. so out of curiosity, i got a copy of the album. gave it a listen and…the rest is history as they say.

i’m still not a beatles fan, but i now enjoy their songs; courtesy of other artists. btw, try to get a copy of Alex Park’s cover of the John Lennon classic ‘Imagine’.

thanks for reading.

“The Cowboy Junkies purvey a surreal brand of moody, slow motion country music. THE TRINITY SESSIONS was recorded with a single microphone in Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity (hence the title), an engineering circumstance that has everything to do with the record’s stark, spacious atmosphere. Bass and lightly brushed drums provide a soft, pulsating background, while gentle guitar embellishments weave around singer Margo Timmins 's haunting vocal performances.”

You guys remember the film Closer? The intro and outro score (The Blower’s Daughter) in that film was sung by this rather mystic Irish fella, Damien Rice.
1956

The album is entitled “O” - that’s a letter, not zero.
1955

The songs were played with deepest simplicity. A guitar sweeps gently as Damien sings honestly about things that are very difficult to say or explain, but he just blurts them easily using simple words as if he is not singing at all, and as if he has nothing to loose anymore. Cellos and violins are often used in support of Damien’s feelings throughout the album. All in all the songs are very simple but the effect is very complicated, they will surely mark something inside you.

Try listening to them at iTunes U.S. Music Store, they’re really very nice.

Eto’ng pinapakinggan ko these past several days (in order):

Physical Graffiti by Lep Zeppelin. Rock!

Kind of Blue by Davis Miles. One of the pinnacles of jazz music. No wonder people buy amps and speakers worth millions just to listen to this CD.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000003TA4.01._AA240 SCLZZZZZZZ.jpg

Nevermind by Nirvana.

Massive Attack - Collected. Mga nagpasimuno ng ‘trip-hop’.
Coolness.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Gleng gleng.

Prince - 3121.
Mapapaindak kayo.

Motorhead - All The Aces.

been listening to a couple of their songs in compressed format on the pc and these guys sound really great! they sing mostly church hymns, classical pieces and christmas carols.

though i’d personally want to hear their first album ‘requiem’ and their christmas project ‘merry christmas’.

a short backgrounder…

“The “Boys Air Choir” was started in 1996 in London, intent on putting together the finest collection of boys’ voices from among some of England’s most famous choirs including St. Paul’s Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The choristers were all between 11 and 16 years old.”

they’ve performed a couple of times in japan and they have been widely received in the country. btw, all their cds are under the victor label so if any of you are interested, you won’t have a hard time looking for their albums.

Hey Chris, I love Ian’s songs. I came to like her songs when I was in Japan. From then on I made a collection of her albums. I love to sing her songs with the guitar or piano too. I was even wondering where she’s gone. Thanks for the link! Most of the albums you showed are all my faves too. Thanks, I’ll check it out. See am preparing for a mini concert of my jazz group Take Five. It’ll be a reunion performance for us. Three years ago the group disbanded. Our sax player had some recording stints in Hongkong. Our pianist left for China. And the group really felt so sad 'bout what happened. But it’ll be a dream come true this coming may 21, a day before my birthday:) This concert will be the best gift I’ll have!!! We’ll be playing mainstream jazz and also songs by famous jazz singers. Guess this could also be one of the reasons I’m stressed out! Anyhow, I’ll try to have enough rest before the big event. And of course I’d like to invite all TF guys to watch…

you intend to play on a regular basis after your pre-bday jam?

anyways, advanced happy birthday! hope your mini concert goes well. break a leg!

geminigirl

05-02-2006, 12:50 PM

Thanks uli! Yes we play Take Five. It’s the group’s signature song, and we have five members that’s why. Most of our insrumental music are from the albums of Grusin, Benoit, Mangione, Klugh,Watanabe,Kenny G(which our sax player plays very well), Malta, etc. Some am not familiar with kasi very wide ang choices ng pianist at sax player namin. Minsan nabablanko ako:D I do the vocals in most of the songs.(am the only female sa group), but the pianist also sings. They are all first-sighters and really versatile, so they can play almost any piece. That I’m proud of. Yes we’ve been performing on a regular basis before. But after two members left, we stopped. Guess we won’t be able to perform again regularly. Maybe only for a while. Sana nga we could cause I really missed singing with the group. Magagaling talaga sila! We had some stints in Manila but we came home. Expensive dun even if you earn so much sa mga five-star hotels. There’s no place like home naman di ba.

This will surely be a grand performance! Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

chris_rock

05-02-2006, 12:56 PM

i don’t have the cd but i was able to listen to the last track. the cd is a compilation of church hymns and traditional songs as interpreted by soloists accompanied by the saint paul’s cathedral choir of london.

the last cut, ‘a gaelic blessing’, was composed by john rutter and was interpreted by connor burrowes, soloist and choir master of the boys air choir of england.

steely dan’s aja. a bit of trivia about the group made up of walter becker and donald fagen. the name ‘steely dan’ was named after a steam-powered DILDO from a 1950’s novel ‘Naked Lunch’.

donald fagen (steely dan’s other half) solo project after the temporary cessation of ‘steely dan’ in 1981. a cut from the album, ‘I.G.Y.’, is about an event that took place in the US in 1957, the "International Geophysical Year’. the event centered on advancement in the physical sciences and it’s implications on post war america. you have got to give the song a listen.

the soundtrack of ‘woman on top’, a tom cruise-penelope cruz flick. bossa and latin music.

another bossa nova and latin music album from putumayo

from jazz pianist and composer david benoit. incidentally, david benoit’s wife kei is japanese. they have an adopted daughter, a japanese girl named june koko.

Joe’s my favorite guitarists of all time.
Although he rarely sings in all his albums, his guitar melodies can tell different emotions at different times. I listen to him when I’m happy, naughty, excited, inspired, on the run, down, in love, or when I feel relaxed, and Joe’s melodies just reinforced those feelings that it seems that the songs are always empathic about my feelings.

Anyway here’s his newest album: Super Colossal
I feel guilty for buying again but I just have to buy this one just to say “thanks”.
2805

I first listened to the songs here at iTunes Music Store. And then read somewhere that Satriani’s got a Video Podcasts documenting all the songs for this album. So I looked for it, and found it posted at iTunes itself, you could view or dowdload them for free.

During the podcasts, Joe tells his viewers how he composed each song on this album, the feelings attached, and what he thought about them. It also features Joe’s own pieces of sketches and you can see them while around a-minute-long preview of the songs are played for you. After I watched and heard him play “Ten Words” and “A Love Eternal” there’s no way I can stop myself from buying that album. So I finally did.

In addition to his really nice music, he is such a nice person and humble too. Why can’t all people be just like joe?

Crystal Planet is one of my most favorite albums by Satch.

Yeah i like Ceremony too, i especially like it when i’m riding my motorbike - i feel like going fast, on my way to saving a beautiful lady who’s about to be offered as a sacrifice in some dark religious ceremony. Yeah, here i come baby!!!

Anyway I’m listening to it now.

I like every song here, but i particularly like “Love Thing”.

Moonpools and Caterpillars’ Lucky Dumpling

If there’s one cd that I won’t trade for anything, it’s definitely Moonpools and Caterpillars’ Lucky Dumpling. The songs are just brilliant (an understatement perhaps?).

My favorite track was, is, and will be Crazy Old World, the last song on the album. Its coated with personifications and poetic moments which I really liked. For instance,

Mother Wind, whispers to me all I need to know, warm my skin don’t let me worry, keep me straight don’t let me fall. I get tired but it’s the crazy old world that I’ve been made a part of.

Wow! I just love that.

A bit morbid but if I die I wanted their song Heaven to be played during my burial. Hehehe!
