Sa mga IT people po. Would you join an Inernational Company, get a very high paying job but the job sucks cause it will be the same and mainly program maintenance and there’s no guarantee that you can keep your job for life. Or would you opt for a challenging job with a Japanese Company, that will treat you like a family, OK OK salary, new projects will always come and you never have to worry about getting fired.

What do u think?

What do u think? If you intend on going back to the Philippines in a few years time - eh mas maganda siguro kung mapuno mo ang iyong bulsa. Never worrying about getting fired is a myth nowadays. The best thing to consider lalo na sa Japan ss to find work that pleases you. Make a career out of something that you enjoy. Otherwise, mabubulok ka lang at mabo-bore sa trabaho…and you’ll end up going in circles…

… tama iyong sinabi ni v_wrangler…

and also, try to be the best in what you do. Ano ngayon kung tanggalin ka sa trabaho? If you are the best in your field, then sigurado namang makakakuha ka ng bagong trabaho. (And not only in IT. If you are the best “dancer” among the entertainers, dont you think walang kukuha sa iyo?)

Thanks for all your thoughts …

Well, first if you are living in Japan and you got released from your contract. Its going to be very difficult to survive specially if your family is with you. Surely, Social Insurance will cover your unemployment period but that’s enough for just paying rent and utilities. Besides, if you have a family, you will not have the attitude of ‘e ano kung tanggalin ako’. Kahit may ipon ka, pag nawalan ka ng trabaho, you have to dig in to your reserves. Minimum you will spend at least 15 man a month minus utilities and apartment rent.

And to answer v_wrangler … no I dont have plans of going back to Philippines permanently. This is where we want to be. There is no place in the world, where you can walk at 3 o clock in the morning and no one will bother you …

The Japanese IT industry is doing well in Japan but is being kicked in the butt by western companies such as IBM HP Dell Accenture… Software developed by Japanese are used by Japanese businesses and are not doing well globally. The Global superpowers are mostly American. Sa tingin ko, the reason why Japanese IT is not doing as well as American firms is because of the Japanese working style. Take Microsoft for example, sobrang bubulok ng OS na inilalabas nila. The Japanese will rarely do business this way. I would rather stay with a Japanese firm, medyo slow nga ang advancement compared sa ibang western companies, pero mas kampante ka, indi ka man makakasiguro dahil sa panahon ngayon, you still have more stability with a Japanese firm than with a Gung-ho american firm. However, If I had money to invest, sa stocks kunwari…

As a looooong timer here, I can share with you some of my views, but you have to decide kung ano ang tama sa 'yo.

  1. Japanese companies are changing. Compared to Western companies, mas hesitant sila magtanggal ng tao, but the “lifetime employment” they used to implicitly promise is no longer there.

  2. Remember that IT is a comparatively new field, with younger companies : they are less tradition-bound. In other words, mas malaki ang tendency nilang magtanggal ng tao!

  3. Kung magaling ka talaga, you will not be expendable whether the company is Western or Japanese. So choose a Western firm with a FIRM and PROVEN commitment to Japan.

  4. Yung social insurance - i-check mo ang eligibility mo. I do not have my references with me now, kaya wala akong exact figures. Pero kailangan ay nakapagbayad ka ng a certain number of months bago ka bibigyan ng unemployment allowance. If I am not mistaken, hindi lang buwan kundi taon ang minimum contribution sa sistema. Hindi katulad ng Canada na after 3 or 6 months yata ay pensionado ka na. Kuripot ang Japanese system compared to other First World countries.

  5. Everyone has to find his own balance between personal happiness, financial gain and emotional security. If the job at the Japanese company is as good as you describe it, and the pay is not bad naman (hindi ka kinakapos, nakaka-ipon ka ng kahit kaunti) - what is your dissatisfaction? Pero kung feeling mo na kailangan mong tumiba nga malaki - calculate the risks and if it seems reasonable to you, go ka na sa Western company.

Magdasal ka for wisdom, discuss it with your wife, then make the decision without looking back. Best wishes!

Hi Pointblank. Maraming salamat sa iyong reply.

I’ve been working for the same japanese company for the last 7 years.

Just want to share you my experienced last year of October. I attended the b-day party ng isa rin nating kababayan dito. Winter that time kaya kahit 5:00 ng madaling araw medyo madilim pa. I wasn’t able too see them but my friend told the police na mga kabataan pa ito. Until now I haven’t heard from the police kung nahuli na. Kaya cguro dapat na rin tayong magingat. Before I was really convinced that Japan is safe to lived but after that incident kahit malapit ang apt. nagtataxi ako kahit galit ang ilang drivers…
