Recent spate of killings in Japan

Yesterday morning, when I turned on the TV, I came across this news report, which I suspect was about a crime. Since my knowledge of Nihongo is very limited (Nihongo wa sukoshi shika dekimasen desu ga…), I asked my more knowledgeable friend about it. No use, she didn’t see the report. This afternoon, at the library, I was enlightened when I saw the headline of The Japan Times- “Girl killed at cram school.” So, the news report was about the alleged stabbing of a 12-year old 6th grader by her teacher. Tsk.

The spate of killing of schoolgirls nationwide has been alarming- three incidents have been reported in a span of two weeks. Worse, two of these cases happened in Kyoto.

Kyoto is a sightseeing spot. Many foreigners visit and eventually reside in the area. As Japan’s former capital, it abounds with temples and shrines well protected to preserve its scenic beauty reflective of the nation’s rich culture.

I used to be untroubled with the peace and order situation therein. Compared to Tokyo, I believe that Kyoto “is relatively safer.”

I’m obviously mistaken. The recent events should be enough eye-openers.

One must always be on-guard.

…The spate of killing of schoolgirls nationwide has been alarming- three incidents have been reported in a span of two weeks. Worse, two of these cases happened in Kyoto…

What is funny about this (or not really) is that the temp teacher is also a product of the same system as the victim. He was going on to law school in one of Kyoto’s best schools, and most expensive one’s (kinda like Rits…), he probably also went to cram schools when he was younger and has always been under pressure to perform well in class, exams and in sports. The victim was a 12 year old girl who’s parents sent to juku for the very same reasons: educational excellency. She was apparently not getting along too well with the teacher in question and was seen as a personal failure by him. So, his solution for this problem was to ‘make her disappear’ or ‘erase’ her. Sounded like he was talking about a stain in his paper. She probably was.
Another thing I find alarming (and not funny) is how the Japanese approach sexuality. Who is one of today’s hottest stars on TV. A PVC clad, almost naked, groin-shaking homosexual dressed up as a sadomasochostic weirdo - Hard Gay. He is adored by children. In the west, or at least in Europe, or anyway Switzernitsch, this kind of character will never be shown before 10pm. And what with all the Grabya idols and bar hosts becoming matinee idols, the morning musume girls and saturday morning countdowns of the best grabya idol DVD’s (just after the best cake shops in the Tokyo area) and men openly reading pornography in crowded buses, isn’t it not too strange that young girls become victims. The Japanese sense of sexual morality went down the drain. Girls are objects. Watch TV and look at all those useless kawai girls. All they do is look pretty, say some useless things, shout kawai from time to time (an exception would be those two white guys doing stage hand jobs at this lunchtime show with Tamori san). I have seen some late night shows where women are really degraded and shown as plain sexual objects. Walking vaginas with tits in a bikini.
Guess that’s why they call this part of Japan the Kinki area.
BTW, hard gay went to the same university as that juku murderer.

Ayon sa balita, sabi ng victim sa teacher(murderer) “kimoi” (きもい) at galit na galit ang teacher.

This word is originally short for “kimochi-warui” pero current usage often refers to a man who is very disgusting or ugly.

Now, every mother is telling her kid, “Never say kimoi to your teacher.”

Here is the article my neighbour (McGregor, the jedi knight, not Totoro) may have read: Japan edgy after recent spate of killings (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/japan_child_killings )

Here is the one from Kyoto involving a juku teacher: Teacher held over Japan stabbing (BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Teacher held over Japan stabbing)

Another one, though not about child murders but if the suicide rate in Japan: Japan suicides reach record high (BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Japan suicides reach record high).

I must agree with the last article. Stress is one the worst killers here in Japan. Don’t you see how many ads mention the word ‘relax’ or something associated to it. The corporate structure dictates that it is better to work than to spend time with your family and even on your own. How many ‘Lipovitan gets you going’ ads are there out there. Those ads that say even if you are tired and it’s late at night, just drink our chemical-seminatural drink and you’ll have all the energy you need to go right back to work.
Even children are under stress to enter the best universities in Japan. Hell, even before they start school they have establishments that prepare these kids to go the best and the most elite kindergartens.
Damn, if I were a kid here, I guess I’ll go crazy too.
I really think that all these murders, suicides, violence, banalized sex and hard gays on TV are but symptoms of a huge social malaise. Society is getting sick. Need a break.

Well, that’s just my brainless assumption.

And in the words of my favorite philosopher Benny Hill, ‘Do not ASSUME. Do not ASSUME. Because if you ASSUME, you make an ASS of U and ME’.

i have always admired the seriousness of the japs, believing that it brought the country where it is- 2nd most developed nation in the world. it is alarming however how costly its journey had been.

yeah, stress is very consuming and hazardous. how it twists one’s thinking at the extreme! :frowning:
