Filipinos in Shimane Prefecture have a registered population of 941 individuals as of 2022, making them the 38th largest group of Filipinos in Japan by prefecture, behind Nara and ahead of Miyazaki.[1]

The Filipino population of Shimane Prefecture is concentrated in three cities: the capital Matsue, with a Filipino population of 275 individuals, and Izumo (226) and Hamada (106).[1:1]

Shimane Prefecture

Shimane Prefecture (島根県, Shimane-ken) is a prefecture of Japan located in the Chūgoku region of Honshu. It is the second-least populous prefecture of Japan at 665,205 (February 1, 2021) and has a geographic area of 6,708.26 km2. Shimane Prefecture borders Yamaguchi Prefecture to the southwest, Hiroshima Prefecture to the south, and Tottori Prefecture to the east.[3]

Matsue is the capital and largest city, with Izumo and Hamada being the other large cities.[3:1]

Except for Kawamoto Town and Chibu Village in the island of Chiburijima in the Sea of Japan, Filipinos are mostly present throughout the whole Shimane Prefecture.[1:3]

Historical population

During the height of Filipino entertainer boom in the mid-2000s, Shimane Prefecture’s population of Filipinos went over 1,000 but has since decreased and has been constantly less than 1,000 for the past 20 years.
