The National Federation of Health Insurance Societies (KENPOREN) would like to inform you of how the Myna health insurance card, which can be used immediately, works. Please prepare beforehand so that you will be able to use your Myna health insurance card at a medical institution or pharmacy if it would become necessary in an emergency.

More than 90% of medical institutions and pharmacies are now equipped with card readers that can verify eligibility online, and Myna health insurance cards can be used to receive medical care there.

The Myna health insurance card is a My Number Card in which the health insurance card has been registered. If you do not have a My Number Card yet, please get one as soon as possible. Don’t forget to register your My Number Card so that it can be used as a health insurance card.

Take your My Number Card to a medical institution or pharmacy to use it as a Myna health insurance card.

Use a card reader with facial recognition to confirm your identity each time. You can find a card reader close to the reception counter.

What are the advantages of using a card reader? Reception can be performed without human intervention! It allows quick and accurate reception at a medical institution or pharmacy.

Next, we would like to explain how to use the card reader to check in at reception.

  1. Insert your My Number Card to confirm your identity. You can select either passcode or facial recognition.

  2. Select yes or no about whether physicians or pharmacists may review your past medical/drug history. If you select [yes] and give your consent, your phycisians or pharmacists can quickly confirm when and what types of drugs you have been prescribed. It means that you can receive much better treatment based on your past medical history. It will alaso reduce the risks of overlapping prescriptions or prescribing drugs contraindicated for co-administration or other contraindicated drugs. Even if you forget you medical information, it can be shared with physicians or pharmacists. It is available not only at you primary clinic but also at other medical institutions, even at a distant clinic on your trip!

  3. If you are 40 years or older, select yes or no about whether physicians or pharmacists may review your routine check-up results. If you select [yes] and give your consent, physicians and pharmacists can confirm your specific medical check-up results. It means that you can receive much better treatment based on your own health/medical data. It can lead to an efficient medical interview witha a clear explanation!

  4. If you have to check you copayment category of the limit amount authorization, select [Use the system of Benefits for High-Cost Medical Care] before removing your card. Select [yes] to provide information on the limit amount, and you can check your copayment category and omit the step of having to have the limit amount authorization issued by your health insurance society. Even if you have to receive high-cost treatment, your expense will not exceed the monthly ceiling with no need to make a temporary payment which is budget friendly for your household.

You have now completed the check-in at reception procedure. Make sure to remove your card.

The current health insurance card system will be abolished on December 2, 2024 and the card will be invalid from December 2, 2025, after one year of transitional measures. If you join a health insurance society on of before December 1, 2024 and have a health insurance card with an expiration date, the card will be valid until that date. Health insurance cards without an expiration date will remain in effect until December 1, 2025.

The Myna health insurance cards will have the advantages of receiving treatment based on your history of checkups, treatment, drugs, and vaccinations, which are information that is not available in the current health insurance cards. Using Myna health insurance cards will led to prevention of identity theft and illegal use of health insurance cards, and reduce clerical work for healthcare workers.

Please switch your card to Myna health insurance card to protect our precious system of medical insurance.

What happens when a card reader at a medical instituition is out of service? After your identity is confirmed at reception with the Myna health insurance card, give information like the name of the health insurance society and the numbers on the certificate. You can provide your certificate information using the “Notification of Your Certificate Information” or “My Information” on the Myna portal.

The “Notification of Your Certificate Information” will be sent to you by your current health insurance society via your company. Bring the “Notification of Your Certificate Information” with your Myna health insurance card for your convenience which includes the basic information such as the certificate of the insured person. You do not have to return it to your company when you lose your eligibility when you resign from the company. It can also be used to apply for insurance services such as health checkups.

What happens if you need a medical consultation during a major disaster? If you need medical consultation during a major disaster, your identity can be confirmed with your certificate information (name of the health insurance society and the number) or information on your name and address.

As a special measure in the event of a major disaster, physicians and pharmacists can see your past history of treatment, drugs and specific health checkups without a My Number Card, with your consent. It means that your can receive your routine treatment at any medical institution other than your primary clinic based on your data.

What will happen to those who do not have My Number Cards or have not registered yet for use? By presenting an eligibility certificate issued by your health insurance society, you can receive medical services covered by health insurance as usual without the advantages of the Myna health insurance card.

The eligibility certificate will be issued by an insurer via companies to those who do not have a Myna health insurance card from December 2, 2024 onward based on a request with and a notification of the insured person’s eligibility. From December 2, 2025 onward, it willbe issued to those for whom an insurer of the health insurance society considers it necessary for a certain period. You have to return the certificate when you lose eligibility at the time of resignation from work.

You can use your Myna health insurance card safely and securely knowing that accurate information provided by the health insurance society is confirmed. The more insured people use the Myna health insurance card, the more efficienc the administration will be and the more appropriate the premiums will be used.

If you have not applied for a Muna health insurance card yet, please apply for one as soon as possible.

What else should I be aware of? When you get a job or after career change, provide your identification number (my number) to your company promptly. Please note the expiration date of your My Number Card and the electronic certification!

You can confirm these items on the Myna portal operated by the government. If you have not yet installed Myna portal, please do it now!
